Valdosta-Lowndes County

Hospitals:

South Georgia Medical Center

South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) is the choice for health care in this region. Our 53 year history brings experience and proficiency in patient care. From routine illness to neurosurgery, from community health promotions to comprehensive cancer care, from childbirth to open heart surgery, SGMC is here for you.

Each year SGMC spends millions upgrading equipment and technology. The Pearlman Cancer Center is the second hospital in Georgia to offer a new class of radiation therapy. The new Intensity Modular Radiation Therapy with Image Guided Radiation Therapy provides reduced side effects, more aggressive treatment to tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue, and better control of radiation dose. Our Cancer Center is also involved in a variety of research programs and clinical trials to discover better methods to diagnose and treat cancer. Similarly we have expanded our neurosurgery program with new operating microscopes and image guided computer technology. Recent upgrades to real-time imaging in radiology and pharmacy automation are a few other examples of our commitment to quality patient care.

The Dasher Heart Center features two all-digital cardiac catheterization labs, an eight-bed cardiac ICU, a 17-bed step-down unit, cardiac rehabilitation, and dedicated Chest Pain Center. Our highly trained cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists work with a skilled support staff to diagnose and treat heart disease by providing catheterizations, angioplasty, stent placement, valve repair & replacement, and open heart surgery. Planning is underway for a dedicated, five-story cardiology tower that will allow our heart program to continue to grow with our region.

SGMC’s new emergency department offers 42 beds including trauma rooms, Chest Pain Center and Clinical Decision Unit, and Fast Track for minor illnesses and injuries. A new ambulatory surgery center and medical office building is expected to be completed fall 2008. Growth is a sign of success and SGMC is growing.
